Job Summary:
The Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist – Flow Chemistry will be part of the Enabling Technologies team. In this position, the scientist will develop innovative flow chemistry solutions to synthesize novel OLED materials. The position also involves modeling, design, and synthesis of organic and organometallic compounds with an emphasis on researching the properties of the materials in the context of OLED display engineering. In this role, you will collaborate with chemists and engineers to optimize syntheses and molecular properties to improve OLED materials and devices.
Key Responsibilities:
Independently propose, direct, and perform scientific experiments, including developing new flow chemistry methodologies, batch to flow conversions, and synthetic procedures in support of OLED material synthesis.
Design, implement, and optimize continuous flow processes for scale-up evaluation
Collaborate with chemical engineers to evaluate reactor configurations, mixing strategies, and heat/mass transfer considerations for scale-up
Develop quantitative understanding of critical process parameters using statistical tools such as Design of Experiments
Use reaction kinetic models and understanding of reaction mechanisms to facilitate process optimization.
Serve as a subject-matter expert in flow chemistry to support other business functions and research programs.
Stay current with flow chemistry and process chemistry literature
Design innovative materials and develop in-depth knowledge of organic electronic material properties, synthesis, and display applications.
Synthesize, purify, analyze, and characterize small to medium scale organic and/or organometallic compounds.
Implement state-of-the-art synthetic methods to access novel organic and/or organometallic compounds.
Be able to write and interpret technical information and effectively communicate with peers within the team and across the organization.
Accurately record experimental work within the electronic notebook(s).
Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area and follow all relevant safety policies.
Be a responsible lab citizen.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in Organic Chemistry, post-doctoral experience or relevant industry experience is preferred
Demonstrate understanding and/or proven experience in flow chemistry method development and batch to flow conversion.
In-depth understanding and proven experience with the synthesis and characterization of organic and/or organometallic compounds.
Demonstrated in-depth understanding of organic and organometallic reaction mechanisms.
Current knowledge in modern synthetic techniques and instrumentation, including, but not limited to modern coupling methods, photochemistry, electrochemistry, and C-H activation
Demonstrated experience in organic and/or multi-step organic synthesis.
Knowledge of modern data analytic tools, including machine learning, Design of Experiments, automated laboratory instruments (i.e. liquid/solid handling robot, autosampler), and analytical techniques (HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, UV-Vis, FT-IR, Raman and other PAT tools).
Experienced in basic computer software and internet applications including: MS Office Suite, ChemDraw, enotebook and LIMS.
Strong organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal direction.
Ability to perform and succeed in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with peers and management.
Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems in an efficient, proactive manner.
Demonstrated track record of accuracy and thoroughness.
